Nathan's Wish: Officers Greet Boy Battling Brain Cancer - Nashua ...

Today is Nathan Norman's 5th birthday, a milestone he and his family have been focused on all year ? truly a gift for the Virginia boy, stricken with terminal brain cancer just before his first birthday.

Nathan's tumultuous journey is chronicled on CaringBridge, a site used by families to keep others informed during medical treatment. You can see lots more via his Facebook page, and view a short YouTube video, which is uploaded with this story, about Nathan's journey.

The New Hampshire connection came a few weeks ago, when word of Nathan's one Christmas wish ? for Christmas cards from local police, firefighters and EMTs ? circulated through the police grapevine and reached New Hampshire, where Nashua Police Department Detectives James Stone and Daniel Ostler joined the contingency from New England, traveling on Dec. 19 to Rustburg, Va. with 200 fellow officers to hand-deliver cards, gifts and police emblems to Nathan.

The caravan of more than 90 cruisers departed from Burlington Mass., on Wednesday morning and made the 10 ?-hour trip to Rustburg, VA. The officers then met with Nathan and his family at Liberty University on Thursday, December 20, 2012 and presented Nathan with the Christmas cards and other gifts and memorabilia that had been collected by the various law enforcement agencies.

?????????

Nathan was diagnosed on Jan. 20, 2009 with a low grade astrocytoma (brain cancer.)

Nathan underwent surgery to remove the brain tumor, but the tumor?s ?tentacles? had grown into the brain, making it?impossible?to remove it all. Nathan has also endured aggressive chemotherapy.

After a particularly grueling treatment in September, Nathan asked his father to hang the Christmas lights.

?I think the lights will make me feel better,? he said.

Nathan?s parents approved of the idea. They believed that it was appropriate to fill their home with the elements of Christmas ? love, hope, peace, and joy ? because it is those same elements that have sustained them throughout Nathan?s ordeal.

Neighbors followed their lead. They also hung Christmas decorations and sent early greeting cards.

Nathan had only one Christmas wish ? to receive Christmas cards from his heroes: officers and firefighters. Sgt. Robert Carpentieri learned of this request when he received an email from a mutual friend. As a Public Information Officer with the Virginia State Patrol, he helped to spread the word.

?Most of us chose this profession out of a desire to help people,? Carpentieri said.? ?This is simply an opportunity to brighten a child?s day, and to let him know that he has our love and support. He may think of us as heroes, but to us, he is a hero, because he has endured so much, and yet he has such a positive attitude?.

The family has put the future into?perspective. Every day is a leap of faith.

?Nathan will be healed one way or another, Dawn said. ?The ultimate healing is in heaven. Nathan is not a victim. Whether God chooses to heal him on earth or in heaven, Nathan wins.?

You may send cards (Christmas, Birthday or New Year's) to:

In the Midst of Climate Change, Can We All Just Get Along ...

Can we all just get along?

This plea, famously uttered by the late Rodney King in a TV appearance during the eponymous riots in Los Angeles 20 years ago, is as relevant to the climate change debate as it then was to the social inequity debate.

The Fall 2012 issue of the Stanford Social Innovation Review is dedicated to the notion that climate science has in fact become a cultural war. The article notes that the public debate around climate change is no longer a scientific exploration ? but rather a struggle over values, culture and ideology.

The science is clear. And, just in case we needed further evidence, with the recent publication of the results of the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature (BEST) Project Professor Richard Muller, a physicist and climate-change skeptic, has declared himself converted. Interestingly, this project was funded in large part by the Charles G Koch Foundation, established by the billionaire US coal magnate who is the key backer of the climate-change skeptic Heartland Institute think tank. Indeed, in the spirit of the newly converted, this report not only finds that climate change is real, but concludes that it is likely all attributable to the human emission of greenhouse gases.

So why are we still not doing anything about it? Why are there still so many people who choose to deny, contradict and scoff at the evidence? Why are we not seeing society changing behaviors and instructing its governments and marketplaces to make different choices to avoid undesirable consequences?

Because we?re human. And humans, notoriously, are not rational creatures.

We need look no further than the advertising industry ? experts in the manipulation of all that triggers behavior change in humans. They don?t deal in facts, in threats, in dire warnings. They deal in aspiration, desire, self-interest, ego and nostalgia. And it works.

So, as uncomfortable as it may be to we practical types who plan, design, build, and measure, our drive for rationality may be the greatest barrier to communicating with audiences who think emotionally. As creators of the built environment we have a tendency to believe that audience members who do not take our design sensibilities seriously, who do not appear to care about environmental concerns, are either ill-informed, ill-intended or both. Regardless of the audience?s education, level of interest or stake in the issue, it is not their responsibility to understand us. It is our responsibility to make ourselves understood.

It is long overdue that we start paying more attention to our humanities colleagues who analyze, sympathize and empathize.

The most successful developments that catch my eye today are the ones that emerge from a collaborative process that engages the entire community in the solution. This is true whether we are looking at infrastructure investment in East London or a new water well in rural Ethiopia. The very best projects begin by listening to community needs and desires and taking the time to understand what must to change if their project is to have the best chance of success.

In this scenario, projects fulfill a private (personal) need at the same time as they fulfill a public (societal) need. This is evidenced by the testimony of happy residents who enjoy the health benefits and social interaction afforded by a walkable, green neighborhood where their children can safely play. Or by the proud mother, now a skilled water technician, who watches her daughter walk to school every day instead of walking five miles to the nearest (dirty) water source.

Our duty then, is not to preach climate change from the rooftops, but to work with communities, to try and help them figure out what to do today to get the future they want tomorrow. There are always barriers. But these barriers are emotional, not physical. We must begin with the understanding that everyone is acting rationally from his or her perspective. From there we must find the right way to communicate understanding, demonstrate responsiveness to concerns and needs, and offer a vision of a future that will meet not only their needs, but the needs of generations to come.

We cannot wait for consensus (and I speak as one who bears the deep scar tissue from my days as the former Planning Director of Seattle) but we can achieve informed consent.

Ruling the world, my ultimate vision for sports ? Jonathan - The Punch

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Monday that his administration was committed to ?Nigeria becoming the best sporting nation in Africa, top four in the Commonwealth and ultimately rule the world.

Jonathan spoke at the opening of a Presidential Sports Sector Retreat held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said the vision was realistic and achievable with hard work, greater sense of purpose and dedication.

The president noted the importance of sports as a source of joy to people, a unifying and mobilising factor and a source of revenue generation.

He charged participants at the retreat to brainstorm and strategise on how to reclaim the country?s past sporting glory, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

?There is no gainsaying that apart from its obvious benefits in bringing joy to our citizens, especially when our teams do well, no other sector of our national life has a greater force for mobilising and uniting our people around a common purpose, than sports.

?I remember vividly as a vice-president when we were to host one team that did well and the Chief of Staff then, Gen. Abdullahi, was emphasising that we must receive these people very well because it only sport and especially when we are winning that Muslims and Christians don?t know the difference between themselves.

?They sing the same songs, dance the same steps and we must encourage sporting activities in this country,? he said.

The president said the country could not overlook the relevance of sports to national development and well being.

He described sports as a viable socio-economic tool for youth development, nation building and for instilling core value of social justice

Jonathan recalled the superlative performance of Nigerian athletes at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics in particular the performances of Chioma Ajunwa who won the first Gold medal for Nigeria and the Dream Team led by Kanu Nwankwo.

He noted, however, that the successes recorded had been waning over the years and that there was the need to retrace Nigeria?s sporting steps.

?This retreat is timely, given the recent disappointing performance of Team Nigeria at the 2012 Olympics in London and our recent lows in football competitions among others.

?This unacceptable trend points to systemic failures that urgently call for a drastic and holistic review of our sports policies,? he said.

The president noted that the retreat was not designed to apportion blames or point accusing fingers, but to find solutions and design a framework for achieving national sporting excellence.

Jonathan tasked states governors to identify potentials where they have comparative advantages in sporting event for development.

He also called on the private sector to devise means of supporting sporting activities.

Earlier, Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the objective of the retreat was among others, to evolve initiatives for further development of the sports sector over the next one to three years.

She noted that regaining the nation?s glory in sports was imperative, considering the importance of the sector to national development.

Okonjo-Iweala said apart from a unifying factor, sports is a big business and a tool for job creation.

She illustrated the claim with a UK example where in 2008 consumers in England spent about 17.4 billion Pounds on sports-related activities which she said represented about 1.5 per cent of the country?s GDP.

The minister said, compared to Nigeria, sports, recreation and entertainment activities represented only about 0.25 per cent of the GDP.

?In England, about 440,000 people are employed in sports-related jobs. This is 1.8 per cent of all employment in England, with three quarters of these jobs in the private sector.

?At the London Olympics, the UK won a total of 65 medals and given the funds invested, we estimate that each medal won cost about 4.8 million pounds or N1.2 billion,? she said.

She identified funding, governance and management challenges as factors hindering the development of sports in Nigeria.

The minister noted that greater transparency was needed in the management of funds allocated to the sports sector.

She said the handlers of various sports federations in the country should also strive to meet up with international best practices.

?Until we fix some of these fundamental institutional problems, all the money we put into the sector would have only limited impact,? she added.

Okonjo-Iweala said that the president had asked for an urgent renovation of the Abuja National Stadium currently in a state of disrepair.

She added that as part of sustainable framework for financing the sports sector, government would explore the national lottery and additional taxes on luxury goods as obtainable in other countries.

Present at the retreat were Vice-President Namadi Sambo, states governors and stakeholders from the public and private sectors.

Iran and US can agree on one thing: There are no direct talks planned

Iran's foreign minister echoed White House denials that the two countries are scheduled to have direct bilateral negotiations on Iran's nuclear program.

By Yeganeh Torbati,?Reuters / October 21, 2012

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks to a gathering at the University of Havana, in Havana, Cuba, in January. The White House and the Iranian government say they are prepared to talk one-on-one to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no specific meeting date right now.

The New York Times, quoting unnamed US administration officials, had said on Saturday that secret exchanges between US and Iranian officials had yielded agreement "in principle" to hold one-on-one talks.

"We don't have any discussions or negotiations with America," Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told a news conference. "The [nuclear] talks are ongoing with the P5+1 group of nations. Other than that, we have no discussions with the United States."

The P5+1 group comprises the permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Britain, China, France, and Russia - plus Germany.

The United States has been working with the P5+1 to pressure Iran?on its nuclear program, but with few results. The United States and other Western powers allege that the program is aimed at developing nuclear weapons, but Tehran says it is purely peaceful.

White house denies

The White House also denied the newspaper report, which came two days before President Barack Obama faces Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in a televised foreign policy debate.

"It's not true that the United States and?Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," US National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in a statement.

"We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

How Would you Change ASUS Transformer Pad TF300

ASUS' Transformer Pad was tucked in beneath the Transformer Prime in the company's range of hybrid Android tablets. The only problem however, was that the company forgot to really differentiate the two -- with only a few hours less battery life the real distinction. But how has it been for you to live with? Did you get used to its slightly fiddly keyboard, have you been as smitten with it as our reviewer? Step into Jonney Shih's shoes and tell us what you'd suggest he does differently when next year's model comes out.

Miguel Cabrera gets in his licks, and his laughs

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:25 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

(Eds: APNewsNow. With AP Photos.)

DETROIT (AP) - When comedian George Lopez showed up at a Detroit Tigers workout Friday, Miguel Cabrera was one of the most excited players on the team.

No surprise there. Baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years seems to enjoy hitting and laughing in equal proportion.

Fans are plenty familiar with Cabrera's talent - his consistently high batting average and awe-inspiring power. But his Detroit teammates appreciate him for more than that. Cabrera may be a bit shy in front of a camera or microphone, but there's a goofy side to the third baseman that helps keep his team loose.

Now in the prime of his career, Cabrera's approach remains meticulous, but he's careful not to take himself or his job too seriously.

Obama-Romney Debate a Chance to Delve Into Global Energy

While President Obama and Mitt Romney have done plenty of sparring over domestic energy-policy? issues?such as gasoline prices and who would drill more on public lands?they should both be prepared in Monday?s foreign-policy debate to lay out how they?ll take on the fundamentals of a rapidly changing world energy economy.

The global energy landscape confronting the next president is very different from the one that faced the candidates battling for the White House just four years ago?and it raises a host of complex new foreign-policy questions.

?You have to go back a long time to find a four-year period where the energy scene has changed so dramatically,? said Michael Levi, an energy-policy expert at the Council on Foreign Relations. ?We don?t just have shifting views on old policy debates, we have debates on issues that didn?t exist four years ago. Because of the political and economic situations, we?ve only been talking about energy domestically, but we haven?t scratched the surface internationally.?

Among the new international energy challenges facing the next president: Asia?s growing thirst for oil means that for the first time in history, developing economies such as China and India will consume more energy than the developed world?and compete aggressively with the U.S. for finite oil resources. The new explosion in U.S. natural-gas production offers opportunities for U.S. companies abroad?and raises questions as companies consider exporting the resource. Melting Arctic sea ice is opening up a new rush to drill for oil in the treacherous north?and possibly setting the stage for future environmental catastrophes. And underlying it all is the increasingly urgent problem of climate change caused by burning the coal, oil, and gas that fuel the global economy?but which scientists say could soon lead to catastrophic extreme weather, rising sea levels, and other disasters.

In a speech on Thursday on ?Energy Diplomacy in the Twenty-First Century,? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spelled out many of those changes and said that her successor will need to place global energy policy at the heart of U.S. foreign policy.

?Energy will be one of the profound issues shaping the 21st century, and we are changing our foreign policy to reflect that,? said Clinton, who has said she expects to retire as the nation?s top diplomat no matter who wins the presidential election.

?Today, energy cuts across the entirety of U.S. foreign policy. It rests at the core of geopolitics. It?s an issue of wealth and power?. It is a matter of national security and global stability. It is at the heart of the global economy and is key to economic development. It?s even an issue of democracy and human rights,? she said.

While energy resources have long played a role in global conflict and diplomacy, their role is increasing and changing.

?This is a moment of profound change ... it raises complex questions about the direction we?re heading,? Clinton said.

Over the last year, Clinton has significantly elevated the role of energy as a driver of foreign policy. Last year, Clinton created the State Department?s Bureau of Energy Resources, charged with forging energy-driven foreign policy around the globe. In the coming weeks, she said, she will be sending out policy guidance to U.S. embassies to elevate reporting on energy and increase outreach to international energy partners.

Among the biggest changes: While the U.S. was the world?s biggest energy consumer and fossil-fuel polluter throughout the last century, China surpassed it in that role two years ago. Studies show that as China, India, and other developing nations continue to grow in the coming decades, the energy resources they choose could have a profound effect on the fate of the global economy?and the planet.

Growing Asian economies are fueled by an increasing appetite for oil, which could send demand and prices higher, dramatically increasing the pollution that causes climate change. It will be essential for the United States and its corporations, Clinton said, to be involved in driving the choices of new global energy consumers.

?The transformation to cleaner energy is central to the 21st-century economy,? she said. ?1.3 billion people don?t have access to energy?we have the technology and know-how that can help people leapfrog to energy that is reliable and affordable but also clean and efficient.?

Meanwhile, U.S. businesses are benefiting from a surge in domestic natural-gas production brought about by breakthroughs in ?fracking? technology. That boom could have a major impact on the world?s energy future, because natural gas has only about half the carbon emissions of coal. Today, U.S. companies are now working in China and Europe to help those countries develop shale gas, which could also help the U.S. achieve strategic geopolitical goals. Russia, the chief supplier of natural gas to Europe, has long wielded that resource as a power lever. But the State Department has created new initiatives for U.S. companies to help European countries develop their own natural-gas resources, which could limit Russia?s power. That?s good for the U.S., but it could also increase environmental concerns about the impact of fracking on water quality.

Another change to the global energy picture: Melting sea ice due to climate change has opened up the Arctic Ocean to oil drilling, and countries are rushing to be the first to exploit the resource. ?The Arctic is a frontier of oil and gas?and also a potential catastrophe. It?s critical we act now to set the rules of the road.? Clinton said. ?Four years ago, these issues didn?t have much currency, but now they?re seen as increasingly important.?

No matter who is the next president, the problem of climate change will need to be confronted. Many U.S. politicians, including Romney, have questioned whether oil and gas emissions contribute to climate change, but those views are out of step with the research of thousands of scientists across the globe. Meanwhile, more leaders in other nations are growing increasingly frustrated with the United States for failing to enact climate policy. Next month, at an annual United Nations summit on climate change, it?s expected that the U.S. will once again come under fire from the rest of the world for dragging its feet on the issue.

Although Obama and Romney have sparred repeatedly over domestic energy issues on the campaign trail, they have said little about how they would approach energy as a foreign-policy matter, let alone lay out how they would address climate change. But both of those issues will be at the heart of the nation?s foreign-policy future, and Monday?s debate provides an opportunity for some serious discussion.

The Spammer

The Spammer

I Hate SPAM

I am one of those people who absolutely detest SPAM. Spammers are unscrupulous, dishonest people too dumb to use proper Internet Marketing techniques. For me, annoyance turned to disgust when a genealogy forum I created became inundated daily with spammers, including porn. Every day, I removed the spam only to have it show up the next day. Finally, I tracked it down to a company called SEO Profiler who spread their client?s garbage wherever they could over the internet. I had to threaten them with a lawsuit before they would stop.

The laws that finally came into effect regarding spamming saw a rise in the hijacking of someone?s email address so that they could use that email address and not be subject to the law. Many of us have had to change our email address due to this.

How do spammers get our email address?

There are email address spiders that search the web and harvest a list of victim's email addresses that they find in various places. Another method is to send out ?tribute? and ?inspirational? emails. ?If you respect our troops?, ?if you love Jesus?, ?if you are my friend?, ?if you hate bullies?, etc., send this on or send it back to me to show you care.

How to prevent your email address being hijacked

I know that pretty well every one of you have friends or loved ones that are simply not very internet savvy. If you send some of these folks jokes or cool things to watch, there is a good chance that they will forward your email to others. That is fine but they often simply click on the forward and send it on to their friends, leaving your email address showing. It is just a matter of time before your email will become hijacked and thousands of people will be receiving spam emails, supposedly from you.

I try my best to prevent this in these ways.

First, I go over the email I intend to forward, making sure that any email address showing is deleted.

Secondly, I use BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) method to select recipients. That creates a single address of undisclosedrecipients@........com instead of individual personal email addresses. There is nothing to harvest.

Lastly, I put the following as an automatic signature on each email.

Thank you for deleting my email address & personal history before you forward it.

Thank you for using BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) instead of "To" and "CC" when sending group e-mails. This helps prevent SPAM & hackers.

Example of a real Spammer

I received a SPAM this email morning. The creep used my friend's email address to disseminate it and it was just a single link to a "Raspberry Drops" SPAM web site. The spammer had used a copy of the Fox News website to try to fool people into thinking they had published the article. This incredibly intelligent person left the O out of the web address to pretend it is from Fox. When you go down the page and try to leave a comment, of course, it does not work and more than the raspberry drops would. Also, each of the links at the top go to a "buy my raspberry crap" page.

Not long ago, I switched to Gmail and found it to be very good at detecting and preventing SPAM. If a SPAM email does get through, click on the ?mark as SPAM? and everyone else on Gmail will be protected in the future from this same email.

There is a never ending list of trolls, thieves and unscrupulous people out there on the web. So, protect yourself and others as much as you can.

3-D-printed airplane takes to the skies

11 hrs.

3-D printers are already being used to create machine parts and small toys, but engineers have now used the technology?to build an entire vehicle: a plastic, unmanned airplane that actually flies.

The plane, created by engineering students at the University of Virginia (U.Va.), has a 6.5-foot wingspan, and was made from assembled printed parts.

The team tested their creation during four flights in August and early September at Milton Airfield near Keswick, Va. The aircraft, which is only the third 3-D-printed plane known to have been built and flown, achieved a cruising speed of 45 mph.

3-D printing?is already proving to be a valuable tool in teaching?students, said David Sheffler, an engineer at U.Va. who worked with students Steven Easter and Jonathan Turman to create the?aircraft.

[How 3D Printing Could Become Commonplace]

?To make a plastic turbofan engine to scale five years ago would have taken two years, at a cost of about $250,000,? Sheffler said in a statement. ?But with 3-D printing we designed and built it in four months for about $2,000. This opens up an arena of teaching that was not available before. It allows us to train engineers for the real challenges they will face in industry.?

Victim in Sandusky case speaks: Justice took too long

He was known only as Victim 1 in one of the most infamous child sexual abuse cases in history. But this week, Aaron Fisher revealed his identity to the world and, in an exclusive interview with "20/20's" Chris Cuomo, told the story of those he said stood in his way as he struggled to bring now-convicted child predator Jerry Sandusky to justice: officials at his own high school.

"Here I am, beside my mom, crying, telling them and they don't believe me," he said in an interview with Cuomo airing on "20/20" tonight at 10 p.m. ET. "I knew they wouldn't."

Fisher has detailed his struggle to have his allegations against Sandusky, formerly a revered Penn State University football coach, taken seriously in a new book,"Silent No More: Victim 1's Fight for Justice Against Jerry Sandusky," published today.

He was 11 when he met Jerry Sandusky in the summer of 2005. Fisher was selected to attend a summer camp run by Sandusky's charity organization for disadvantaged children, The Second Mile, on Penn State's campus.

Fisher said Sandusky immediately took a special interest in him. He encouraged Fisher's athletic interests, taking him to both college and pro sports events.

"We sat in box seats," said Fisher. "He was just kind of like a giant stuffed teddy bear. He seemed like the all-natural father figure -- something that most kids wished their dads did."

Young Aaron came from a struggling family and didn't have a father at home. Dawn Daniels, Fisher's mother, recalled the times Sandusky took the boy away for the weekend to give her a break.

"Everybody knew who he was," said Daniels, "He's a great guy. Everybody, even my own father, said he does great things for kids."

Sandusky's reputation had preceded him and put Daniels at ease as far as allowing her son to spend so much time with Sandusky. But according to Fisher, Sandusky slowly turned from a "father figure" into something much darker.

"He'd put his hand on my leg while we were driving," Fisher said, "My family never did that, so it was kind of weird."

By the time Fisher was 12, Sandusky was sexually assaulting him. Fisher said fear, shame and confusion prevented him from seeking help and telling anyone about his tormentor.

"There were so many emotions and thoughts running through my head," he said. "Being a kid, you never know what to do, and you don't know who to tell because you don't know who you can trust."

Fisher said Sandusky began seeking him out at his own high school, Central Mountain High School in Lock Haven, Pa. Sandusky was a volunteer football coach there and would pull him out of class, with school officials' blessing.

Daniels said the school never notified her about all of the classes her son missed because of Sandusky and Fisher said no teacher or administrator ever questioned Sandusky's motives.

It grew to be too much and Fisher said he tried to do everything in his power to stay away from the ex-Penn State coach, sometimes hiding in school bathrooms rather to avoid meeting with Sandusky. But Sandusky only grew more aggressive, Fisher said.

"He once followed my bus home from school," he said. "I took off running but he drove on the opposite side of the street, onto oncoming traffic to catch up with me. I ran up an alley and he went to my house and parked out front."

Daniels said she was alarmed by the hundreds of phone calls Sandusky made to the house. By the time Fisher was 15, he reached a breaking point and finally summoned the courage to tell his mother and the school's principal, Karen Probst, that Sandusky was sexually abusing him.

"Aaron was melting down in the office," Daniels said. "I immediately told them we need to call the police."

But the mother and son say they were shocked by the principal's response.

"They said that Jerry has a heart of gold and that he wouldn't do those type of things," Daniels said "They tell me to go home and think about it."

Daniels did not follow their advice. Instead she says she told Probst that she would be notifying Clinton County Children and Youth Services of the allegations directly.

Daniels and Fisher later learned that Central Mountain High School officials did call CYS, but they say the call only came after the mother and son left the principal's office. School officials are legally mandated to report all allegations of child sex abuse and have said that the allegations were reported immediately.

For Fisher, the initial suggestion that those meant to protect him did not believe his story was crushing.

Clinton County CYS psychologist Michael Gillum was one of the first to handle Fisher's case.

"It was obvious to me immediately that he was upset, that something had, in fact, happened to him," Gillum told "20/20."

Gillum said he was shocked by the claim that Central Mountain's principal, Probst, had told Fisher and Daniels to go home.

When confronted outside the school by "20/20", both Probst and football coach Steve Turchetta -- who pulled Fisher out of his classes for meetings with Sandusky -- declined to answer questions. In grand jury testimony, Turchetta said that he took kids out of class for those meetings even though he developed suspicions about the relationships.

Much to Fisher's dismay, coming forward with the allegations was only the beginning of a long battle to bring Sandusky to justice. It would take years for an arrest.

"The broken promises, the numbers of state troopers," Fisher said, "and he's not even in jail."

Sandusky was interviewed by CYS but he laughed off the allegations, painting Fisher as a troubled kid, Gillum said.

Meanwhile, the police made Fisher retell his story four times over the course of three years. He was forced to go before two grand juries. Yet still, the attorney general prosecuting the case said authorities needed more victims to charge Sandusky.

To Fisher, it meant his suffering was not enough.

Fisher said every delay in the case caused him to grow increasingly desperate and drove him to contemplate suicide.

"I thought maybe it would be easier to take myself out of the equation," he said. "Let somebody else deal with it."

Finally, in 2011, there was a break in the case. Allegations surfaced from a Penn State coach, Mike McQueary, that he had witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy in a university locker room years earlier.

On Nov. 5, 2011, just before Fisher's 18th birthday, Jerry Sandusky was arrested following an indictment by a grand jury on more than 40 counts of child sexual abuse. In June 2012, Sandusky was tried and convicted on 45 of 48 counts. He was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison, a virtual life sentence for the 68-year-old man.

"I wasn't expecting it," Fisher said, "I was kind of thinking that he'd get off scot free with this."

Though the conviction was a victory, Sandusky was not the only adult who Fisher felt betrayed his trust. Fisher still has questions for the teachers and administrators at his high school.

"It's a fact that I lost a good portion of my childhood," he said. "I endured heartaches and numerous amounts of people who didn't believe me and walked away from me."

Watch the full story on "20/20" tonight at 10 p.m. ET.

HBT:Overaggressive Cards come up empty in Game 5

In getting shut out by the Giants on Friday, the Cardinals never worked a walk against Barry Zito and company. Their one free pass was intentional, as Pete Kozma was walked ahead of the pitcher to set up an inning-ending double play in the second inning.

In all, the Cardinals have drawn a total of eight unintentional walks in five games against the Giants. That?s a remarkably low total from an offense that finished fourth in the NL with 533 walks. And it?s not like the Giants have been throwing Cliff Lee over and over again. They were seventh in the NL in walks allowed by their pitchers, at 489.

Matt Holliday and Jon Jay have been the most aggressive of the Cardinals hitters so far, and it seems to be taking a toll. Holliday went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts tonight and is 4-for-21 with no extra-base hits in the series. He hasn?t homered since the wild card game against the Braves two weeks ago. Jay, the Cardinals? leadoff man, is 5-for-21 with no walks. He?s also been awful in road games all year long, so there?s a case for sitting him with the series returning to St. Louis on Sunday. However, the Cardinals value his defense so highly that it?s unlikely they?d go that route.

At the very least, hitting coach Mark McGwire should have talks with both. For Holliday, this is shaping up as his sixth lousy postseason series in seven total series with the Cardinals. He hit .289 with five homers and 10 RBI during the Rockies? World Series run in 2007, but since arriving in St. Louis in 2009, he?s come in at .250 with three homers and 13 RBI in 108 at-bats. Much of that production came in last year?s NLCS against the Brewers. He went 3-for-19 with no RBI in the World Series last year, and he?s hitting .222 with seven RBI in 45 at-bats so far this month.

Court: Judge erred in tossing Smith case verdicts

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An appellate court said a trial judge erred in dismissing conspiracy convictions against Anna Nicole Smith's psychiatrist and manager, a ruling that defense attorneys said could send the case in different directions.

The ruling came after Superior Court Judge Robert Perry chose to throw out the 2010 jury verdict that Smith manager Howard K. Stern and psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich conspired to obtain prescription drugs for the troubled model by using false names.

The judge found it was not unusual in the celebrity world Smith inhabited for fake names to be used to protect privacy.

The Second District Court of Appeals reversed those findings, saying there was enough evidence to support the conspiracy convictions. It said Stern cannot be tried, but Eroshevich might get another trial. However, the judge also could take different actions because the appellate court returned the case to him with no instructions.

"We express no opinion on how the trial court should exercise its discretion," the ruling said.

Lawyers called the decision confusing.

"I'm not sure I fully understand it," said attorney Bradley Brunon, who represents Eroshevich. "What they said is that what the judge did in dismissing for insufficient evidence is wrong. But he could get to the same place by reviewing the case as what we call a 13th juror."

Brunon said he would have to do additional research to understand the potential implications.

Attorney Steve Sadow, who represents Stern said it was clear from the decision that Stern cannot be tried again without double jeopardy violations. But he said Perry could again review Stern's motion for a new trial.

"If he granted the motion, Howard still could not be tried again," Sadow said.

Sadow said the appeals court obviously had been wrestling with the issue of double jeopardy and had the parties brief it several times.

The convictions of Stern and Eroshevich were minor in the overall scope of the case. Most of the 11 counts resulted in acqutttals.

The prosecutors who brought the appeal said they had not yet read the decision and had no comment. Sadow said prosecutors could appeal to the California Supreme Court.

Stern and Eroshevich were convicted Oct. 28, 2010, in the case of the reality TV star and former Playboy model.

In September of last year, prosecutors filed an unusual appeal saying Judge Perry was biased and had created a celebrity exception to the law. The appellate court did not address these points.

A case involved prescriptions given to Smith in the months before she died in Florida on Feb. 8, 2007, of an accidental drug overdose. The defendants were not charged with causing her death.

The two guilty verdicts against Eroshevich and Stern on conspiracy counts involved the use of false names to obtain prescription pain medications for Smith. Eroshevich also was convicted of one count of obtaining Vicodin under a false name.

Perry dismissed the conspiracy counts and reduced the one conviction against Eroshevich to a misdemeanor with a sentence of one year of probation and a $100 fine. Her lawyer said she has fulfilled those terms.

At trial, Perry suggested authorities had chosen the wrong case to prove their point and indicated they did not understand the legislative intent of the law involving prescription drugs.

"There is no doubt that there are doctors who are nothing more than pill pushers and should be prosecuted and imprisoned.," he said in his ruling. "This case did not involve such doctors."

A co-defendant, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who was Smith's physician, was acquitted of all charges.

The defendants' nine-week trial was the final act of the long-running drama centering on the blonde beauty's troubled life, which was documented on reality TV, in tabloids and in trial testimony.

Myths and Truths of Hybrid Cars ? Auto Transport Companies ...

hybrid car how it worksHybrid cars, in terms of saving energy, are proven the best fuel-efficient cars. If you are environmental friendly and like going green while moving out on your vehicle, then purchasing a hybrid car is the best way to go. Some myths or misconceptions regarding hybrid car might prevent you from buying it, but you should not pay any heed to them. These are just misconceptions, nothing else. Here is the brief information related to hybrid myths:

Hybrid Cars are Slow and Small

hybrid car speed

If you have never been inside a hybrid car, you will believe this myth just because others do. Hybrids are neither small nor slow. In fact, some of the hybrid models such as Prius are popular than other midsized sedan type vehicles. The myth will simply break down the while you are inside. Besides, if Prius is not big enough for you and you do not like rear door vehicles, then Camry hybrid is best.

About speed? It is all about perception. Otherwise, the hybrids can go 0 to 60 within 9.5 seconds. When you will drive it, your reaction will simply be great because of having a luxurious ride.

Hybrid Cars are Erratic

Hybrid Car Sales Shoot

Hybrid cars are erratic and unreliable is another biggest misconception. 96, out of every 100 Toyota Prius hybrids being sold in last 10 years, are on the road running in perfect order. This means hybrids are perfectly reliable. The only thing, which makes a drive nervous, is its battery that is not a big issue after couple of rides.

Hybrid Cars are Expensive

Prius

Even though there are few expensive models, but most of the hybrids are affordable for an average citizen. Some of the affordable hybrid cars are new Prius C, Prius V, and Plug in Prius available at starting prices of $18,950$, $26,550,and $32,000 respectively.

Even if you buy the expensive one, in the long run, it will be less expensive as compared to other vehicles. Hybrids run on the combination of gas and electric engine that make them fuel-efficient. Besides, maintenance and repair costs in comparison with other vehicles are less.

Does Increasing Tax Rates Make Sense? | CunningamBlog.ca ...

Two interesting topics have surfaced in newspapers across the country this week. In the first, Canada?s Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty, announced that even though corporate tax rates have decreased, corporate tax revenues increased 5.8% year over year. In the second piece of news, The Broadbent Institute released an income equality research study that revealed 83% of Canadians interviewed would support higher income taxes for the wealthy and almost 75% said they want corporations to pay higher income taxes. Assuming the government actually pays attention to the media and is influenced by studies such as this, should the government take any action to adjust tax rates? One the one hand, it appears that most Canadians feel high income individuals and corporations are not paying their fair share of taxes, but, on the other hand a reduction in tax rates appears to have led to an increase in tax revenues.

Mitt Romney tried to explain this concept, commonly referred to as the ?Laffer curve? by economists, to Barrack Obama in their recent televised presidential debate. Over the past decade, in both the United States and Canada ? the statistics have revealed that a reduction in tax rates actually leads to an increase in tax revenues. This may seem counterintuitive and it is certainly not without controversy (as a side note, I think this would be a good correlation theory for Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, the guys behind Freakonomics and SuperFreakonomics, to investigate). People often cite the fact that there are other factors at play here, which there likely are. However, it appears that at least in some circumstances a reduction in tax rates has led to an increase in tax revenues. After George W. Bush introduced tax rate cuts, the top 5% of taxpayers went on to pay $1.28 trillion more in federal income taxes than they did under the previous president?s tenure. In addition, the share of income tax paid by the top 1%, the top 5% and the top 10% of income earners all went up. Similar increases in tax revenues as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product occurred when Regan slashed the personal tax rate in the US in the 1980s, when Ireland decreased their corporate tax rates between 1985 and 2004, and when Russia implemented a flat tax in 2001. Not to mention the recent increase in Canadian corporate tax revenues, despite the decrease in the Canadian corporate income tax rate.

Why does this happen? Well, there are a few explanations. Some people suggest that as tax rates decrease, a country becomes more attractive for foreign investors. Foreign investment and capital creates a larger tax base, i.e. more people and corporations to pay tax, which leads to higher overall tax revenues. Another theory is that when taxpayers pay less tax, they have more money to spend. If both individuals and corporations spend more, this benefits the economy, businesses earn more profit, and more profit leads to more tax revenues paid and collected. The last theory suggests that taxpayers are more likely to declare all of their income when taxes are lower. When tax rates are higher, some taxpayers feel that the risk of not declaring and paying taxes on all of their income is less than the benefit of following the law and paying the additional tax upfront. When tax rates are lowered, the risk-benefit analysis shifts and taxpayers are less inclined to cheat the taxman.

These explanations make the French government?s recent proposal to tax the super rich at a higher rate all the more perplexing. France is considering taxing individuals who make more than 1 million Euros at a rate of 75%! Talk about creating a disincentive for wealthy individuals to remain a tax resident of France. With movement particularly easy within the European Union, a taxation policy, especially one as drastic as this one, we will likely see a mass exodus of capital leaving France and headed to more tax-friendly EU countries.

It will be interesting to see whether this new tax policy in France will have the desired effect, i.e. increase tax revenues for the government, or whether history will repeat itself and the government?s tax revenues will decrease or, at best, remain the same.

Second dog death prompts concerns about pets on planes

Featured

8 hrs.

As another dog owner mourns the death of his pet after a?flight, there?s growing concern about the safety of beloved furry companions in?the cargo holds of commercial airlines.

?We all think it?s kind of like us, you get on your plane?and everything is nice and they?re our pets, so they must be taking care of them?too,? said Michael Jarboe, whose dog Bam Bam died after a United Airlines flight?last month.

?But what I found out is, when you check your pet, you run?the exact same risk of them not showing up as you do with your luggage. That?s?kind of sobering.?

Jarboe is sharing his story just days after model Maggie?Rizer said the negligence of United resulted in the death of her two-year-old?golden retriever Bea.

United?expressed condolences in both cases.

?We have?been in contact with Mr. Jarboe and are saddened by the loss of his dog, Bam?Bam. The safety of the animals we transport is always considered first and?foremost when making decisions regarding their routing and carriage,? United?said in a statement to NBC News.

Jarboe and his partner flew from Miami to San Francisco with?Bam?Bam on Aug. 28. The two-and-a-half-year-old Neopolitan Mastiff had flown?four times before ? twice on United ? without any problems, Jarboe said.

There were direct connections available on other airlines,?but Jarboe booked a United flight with a layover in Houston specifically?because he was impressed with the carrier?s PetSafe program.

The service promises plane compartments that are pressurized?in the same way as passenger cabins, climate-controlled facilities and??personal handling in climate-controlled vehicles? for connections in United's?hubs, if the animal is exposed to temperatures greater than 85?F for more than?45 minutes.

?I had such trust in United and everything that they?promised me,? Jarboe, who lives in Miami Beach, Fla., told NBC News.?Bam Bam?s?transport cost $650 each way.

It was 95 degrees when the plane landed in Houston, Jarboe?said. After a layover of about three hours, he and his partner boarded and looked?for the air-conditioned van that they thought would bring their dog, but Bam?Bam arrived instead in a regular metal boxed luggage cart, Jarboe said.

?We had a direct shot, I could see right inside his kennel?and I have never seen him that hot ? ever,? Jarboe recalled. ?His tongue was?hanging out so far, it couldn't have hung out any farther, he just looked?awful. I kept thinking, why is he not on a van??

When they arrived in San Francisco, they were told the dog?didn?t make it, Jarboe recalled. The cause of death was acute cardiovascular?collapse, according to a letter sent to Jarboe by United, which paid for the?dog?s?necropsy.

?The untimely death of Bam Bam was not a result of transit-related handling,? the airline said in the letter signed by Cheryl Ortiz,?United?s cargo claims manager. Writing back to United, Jarboe called the?finding ?naive and absurd? and said Bam Bam?s vet described what Jarboe?witnessed in Houston as a ?recipe for a heat stroke.?

When asked why a climate-controlled vehicle wasn?t used to?transport the dog, United would only say that it brought Bam Bam to a holding?area for greater comfort?during his connection. The holding facilities are USDA Animal?Welfare-approved and provide ample room and air ventilation, as well as regular?monitoring and watering provided by trained PetSafe personnel, United said.

The airline has refunded the dog?s transport fare and is?working with Jarboe on additional compensation.

If you?re a pet owner, you should know that The?Humane Society of the United States recommends that you do not transport yourpet by air unless absolutely necessary.?

Excessively hot or cold temperatures, poor ventilation, scarcity of oxygen, and rough handling all contribute to animal deaths, the?group says on its website.

Between?January 2012 and July 2012, 17 pets died and another 17 were injured on?commercial airlines, according to reports issued by the U.S. Department of?Transportation.

In?2011, 35 pets died while flying, but only two of those losses were suffered on?United, which had the lowest number of animal deaths that year.

The DOT is now considering a new rule that would expand how airlines report the number of animals that were lost, injured, or died during air transport.

In the meantime, Jarboe is mourning the loss of Bam Bam.

?It never occurred to me that when he was down in the hold he was dying,? he said.

Obama, Netanyahu united against Iran nuclear drive

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday expressed solidarity on the goal of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, the White House said, amid signs of easing tensions over their differences on how to confront Tehran.

Obama, who opted not to meet Netanyahu on his U.S. visit, spoke by phone to the Israeli leader, who used his U.N. speech on Thursday to keep up pressure on Washington to set a "red line" for Tehran. But in a softening of his approach, Netanyahu also signaled that no Israeli attack on Iran was imminent before the November 6 U.S. presidential election.

"The two leaders underscored that they are in full agreement on the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," the White House said in a statement. But it stopped short of saying Obama had given any ground on his resistance to issuing an ultimatum to Tehran as Netanyahu has demanded.

Mitt Romney, Obama's Republican presidential rival, was expected to speak by phone to Netanyahu later on Friday while the Israeli leader was in the New York.

Tiny medical electronics dissolve harmlessly inside your body

12 hrs.

A team of researchers has created a form of electronics that can be implanted in a patient's body then forgotten about ? because the implants will dissolve within a week or two. Such safe and hassle-free electronic monitoring could revolutionize medical care.

Implanting devices in the body is nothing new, but usually the risk is only worth it for life-threatening problems: a pacemaker, for instance, or an insulin pump. But there are lots of?situations where constantly monitoring some vital statistic would be useful. A thermometer or blood sugar monitor could help make sure a post-operative patient is safe during the critical first week ? but the stress and cost of the implantation and removal operations can't be justified.

But what if the implant was inexpensive and made of nontoxic materials that would break apart and be resorbed into the body after a set period of time? That's just what researchers, led by Professor?Fiorenzo Omenetto at Tufts and?John A. Rogers at the University of Illinois, have accomplished.

The tiny devices, which they call "transient electronics," are made from silicon and silk. Silicon is, of course, a?normal material for electronics, but it is also a common organic element found in our own bodies, and small amounts of silicon are easily dissolved in water or bodily fluids. Modern manufacturing techniques allowed the team to make silicon circuits only tens of nanometers thick, meaning they are well within healthy quantities?to be ingested.

Circuits are usually mounted on plastic or some other non-soluble material. But on transient electronics, the circuit?board is made of silk protein extracted from silkworm cocoons, a material that is strong but also very biodegradable. Omenetto and his team managed to adjust its properties so they can control how long it takes for the silk to degrade ? meaning they can create devices that melt down after a day, a week, or more. Theoretically,?it could last for years,?Rogers told NBC News via email,?but the design the team has been working on was made for the two-week post-operative period.

They use wireless power ? harvesting energy from radio transmissions to operate?the circuits. Rogers said that they can do non-rechargeable batteries, too, but that work isn't published yet.

So far, they've put together a temperature monitor and a tiny camera, both of which could be used for a number of purposes in the medical establishment. The next step, aside from applying for the usual testing and approvals, is to make the devices responsive to things like light or pressure, so that they could be activated or perhaps even destroyed at the command of a doctor or patient.

Beyond the body, such biodegradable devices could also safely be introduced to natural environments without the need to recover them, and without the risk of polluting or poisoning local wildlife.

The research was made possible by a number of grants from DARPA, the NSF, the NIH, and others. The paper is entitled "A physically transient form of silicon electronics," and can be found in this week's edition of the journal Science.
