Israel and Palestine to resume peace talks; Japan and Chins to hold talks in effort to de-escalate territorial row; Cambodia's opposition leaders reject election results; China activates natural gas pipeline from Burma; John Kerry to visit Pakistan; Morsi supporters call for fresh protest rallies in Egypt; Italian court to make appeal judgement on Berlusconi's alleged tax evasion; and more

Top of the Agenda: Kerry Restarts Mideast Peace Talks

Israeli and Palestinian negotiating teams will resume peace talks (Haaretz) Monday night in Washington, DC, after the Israeli cabinet on Sunday approved the release of 104 Palestinian prisoners who have been jailed since before the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993. The release of the prisoners had been one of the major obstacles (AP) to the resumption of peace talks, which were brokered by U.S. secretary of state John Kerry. The talks represent the first direct dialogue (WaPo) since the peace process fell apart in September 2010, and will see Israel's Tzipi Livni and Yitzhak Molcho sitting down with Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat and Mahmoud Abbas aide Mohammed Shtayyeh.

Analysis

"Just this month [President Obama] gave a speech defending vigorously his use of drone attacks. So we escalate our effort to kill terrorists while urging an ally to release terrorists from prison. It would be worth asking the administration how that position can be defended morally," writes CFR's Elliott Abrams on his blog, Pressure Points.

"Israel and Palestine need a two-state peace. It would involve bitter compromises on both sides, but no more bitter than those accepted by Nelson Mandela in putting the future before the past, hope before grievance," writes Roger Cohen for the New York Times.

"The two-state solution may well be on the line as well. As former Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin warned recently, Israel is 'approaching a point of no return.' Against this backdrop, Kerry's great challenge is to apply some Kissinger muscle. Putting the full-court press on the Israeli and Palestinian leadership, however, is going to require a little more media savvy," writes Bruce Van Voorst for Foreign Policy.

Japanese Minister Visits China

A top Japanese minister will visit China (Reuters) on Monday and Tuesday for talks with senior officials in a bid to smooth relations soured by an escalating territorial row. A top government adviser also said Sunday that Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe could soon hold a summit with Chinese president Xi Jinping.

CFR's Sheila Smith discusses Japan and the East China Sea dispute in this article.

CAMBODIA: Cambodia's opposition leaders rejected the preliminary results (NYT) of Sunday's election, accusing the authoritarian government of Prime Minister Hun Sen of cheating.

BURMA: China has activated a new pipeline bringing natural gas (AP) from Burma in a project that has raised concerns about China's energy project and its impact on Burma's locals.

Kerry to Visit Pakistan

U.S. secretary of state John Kerry is scheduled to visit Pakistan (Dawn) on July 31 after accepting an invitation on the sidelines of the ASEAN conference in early July. Kerry will hold meetings with Pakistani leaders and participate in the Pakistan-U.S. strategic dialogue.

This CFR Crisis Guide covers Pakistan's contentious history and evolution.

(AP) ? In dark sunglasses and a uniform studded with medals, Egypt's top general is everywhere, looking down from posters and banners proclaiming him "lion of the nation." Adoring songs vow "We are behind you."

Barely a month after he removed the elected president, Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi is riding a wave of adulation, drawing comparisons between him and modern Egypt's first charismatic strongman, former President Gamal Abdel-Nasser. State media and pro-military TV channels and newspapers have done everything they can to fuel the fervor.

But some warn that the personality cult could pave the way to new authoritarianism after a coup that the army and its supporters insist was aimed at promoting democracy.

"I worry about el-Sissi and the possible arrogance of the victor. And I fear him if he decides that the army is stronger than any future president that he will control like a puppet," wrote Mohammed Fathy, a columnist in the newspaper Al-Watan. "The admiration for him has gone beyond normal levels and is now more like deifying him."

The hype has swelled to the point that some are convinced el-Sissi will take off his uniform and run for president in elections due to take place early next year. A military spokesman denied el-Sissi has any intention to do so. That has done nothing to end the speculation by those for and against the idea.

"Bottom line, el-Sissi will be president because he has no choice but to be. People have already started treating him as such and because he is de facto ruler," Fathy wrote in a column on Monday, adding that media are depicting the general as "Nasser 2013."

The raving over el-Sissi is rooted in the satisfaction many Egyptians took from his July 3 coup removing President Mohammed Morsi. It came after four days of massive protests by millions nationwide demanding the president step down, accusing him of failing to manage the country and handing power over to his Islamist allies.

The nationalist fervor and resentment of the Islamists has so far all but drowned out arguments by Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi's other supporters that the coup against Egypt's first freely elected president has wrecked democracy. Two large-scale killings of dozens of pro-Morsi protesters in clashes the past three weeks have won them little sympathy amid a public attitude ? again fueled by the military, officials and many media outlets ? that the protesters are violent extremists.

But the lavish celebration of el-Sissi also speaks of a nation looking for a leader it can rally behind. It underscores a close bond between the Egyptian public and the armed forces. As a mostly conscript army, there is hardly an Egyptian family that hasn't sent a son to the military, which fought four wars with Israel ? the most recent in 1973.

That translates into a trust of the army's intentions among many.

"The army will not stay forever, just long enough to restore order and security in the country," said Ezzat Fahim, a 38-year-old father of two. He carried an el-Sissi poster in Cairo's Tahrir Square during massive nationwide rallies on Friday that the general himself called for as a show of support for the military to act against "terrorism."

The degree of trust has survived among much of the public despite the fact that the generals were the power behind the scenes during six decades of authoritarian rule. Hosni Mubarak, ousted in the 2011 uprising after 29 years in power, was a career air force officer.

The military ruled directly for nearly 17 months after Mubarak's fall until Morsi was inaugurated ? a period that bruised the generals' image, with anti-military protests in the streets and accusations of abuses by troops. Some believe that after that experience, el-Sissi will be wary of seeming to hold too much power.

"So far, I am not worried of him seizing power," said Mohammed Hashem, a leftist book publisher and veteran pro-democracy campaigner. "I see no signs that he is tempted to do so. If he does, I will be out on the streets again shouting 'down, down with military rule'."

But the el-Sissi-fest is powerful, seemingly rooted in part in a desire for a charismatic nationalist figure.

Morsi, the country's first president not to come from the military, was unable to create that image, with his Islamist agenda appealing only few outside his base. Mubarak sorely lacked charisma and a human touch and was seen as building up a regime based on cronyism and corruption and the power of oppressive police agencies.

The yearning could explain the rampant comparisons to Nasser.

Nasser, a military officer, was the mastermind of a 1952 coup that toppled the monarchy. As president, Nasser was lionized for nationalizing the Suez Canal in 1956, negotiating the withdrawal of occupying British forces, dismantling the feudal agricultural system and spreading free education. When he died in 1970, millions participated in the funeral.

Since his death, many acknowledge his faults: His rule was oppressive against both secular and Islamist dissidents, and the state-run system he created decayed into corruption. But there is also nostalgia for what was seen as good in him.

That worries some.

"The notion of someone becoming the savior and hero of a nation as big and ancient as Egypt is a big mistake," prominent rights campaigner Gamal Eid warned.

El-Sissi, he said, "knows fully well that people are inclined to trust those who are sincere even if they don't approve of what they do."

The sort of enthusiasm for the 58-year-old el-Sissi has not been seen since Nasser's heyday in the 1950s and 1960s.

In the huge crowds that came out for Friday's rally, many waved posters juxtaposing pictures of el-Sissi and Nasser. "Buy the picture of el-Zaeem," shouted one woman selling el-Sissi posters, using the Arabic word for "leader" exclusively associated in Egypt with Nasser.

Protesters wore around their necks small portraits of el-Sissi next to a lion symbolizing strength. One poster had him smiling and in his hallmark dark sunglasses with the words: "El-Sissi, the love of the people."

Protesters drew a giant portrait of el-Sissi with green laser beams on the side of a high-rise hotel overlooking Tahrir.

Ghada Shereef, in an op-ed piece Thursday in the independent Al-Masry Al-Youm, gushed that if el-Sissi gave the word, women would line up to marry him or just be his concubines. "That is a man who is adored by Egyptians," she wrote in the article, titled "El-Sissi, just wink to get what you want."

Previously the head of military intelligence, el-Sissi was little known outside the army when Morsi appointed him defense minister and head of the armed forces last August. Morsi's aides have said they saw him as a pious Muslim who had shown signs of sympathy with their Islamist agenda.

As army chief, however, he's shown no political agenda in any direction.

But he has cultivated a unique charisma for a military man. Unlike the usual stern-faced generals, el-Sissi has shown an emotional side, a quality many of his fans cite as proof of his compassion.

On Sunday, he sat at a police graduation ceremony fighting back tears as the commander of the police academy waxed lyrical on his patriotism. The army's propaganda machine has also been marketing him as a youthful and energetic leader. Army videos show el-Sissi jogging in camouflage fatigues along with other commanders, or warmly chatting with soldiers during war games.

It's a stark contrast to his near-mummified predecessor, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the Mubarak-era defense minister who ruled Egypt for nearly 17 months until Morsi was inaugurated and soon after removed him.

El-Sissi has invited celebrities to army-sponsored functions. At a live concert in April, he held the microphone like a pop singer to address the audience.

"I want to say something to you: Don't ever worry about Egypt," he said. "Egyptians can change the whole world when they want." The singers and dancers who had just finished their show broke into chants of "the army and the people are one hand."

Top 10 College Baseball Stadiums: 5. Hawks Field at Haymarket Park (Nebraska)

? July 29, 2013Posted in: Big Ten, CBD Column

HaymarketField

While college baseball season might be over, College Baseball Daily is keeping you covered by counting down the Top 10 Stadiums in the country. ?Each day we?ll have a different stadium, including the history and fun facts, until we reach the number one stadium in all of college baseball. We continue the countdown today with number 5 with Nebraska?s Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

Set in the city of Lincoln, Hawks Field at Haymarket Park allows Cornhusker fans a great experience at the ballpark. When the field opened in 2002, fans were able to flock to the 32 acre complex to enjoy their Cornhuskers baseball and softball teams, as well as the Lincoln Saltdogs, who play for the American Association of Independent League Professional Baseball. The field itself is named for Myrna Hawks, who was an avid supporter of the Cornhuskers? baseball program and passed away before the completion of the stadium. Myrna, along with her husband Howard committed to the construction and allowed for this perfect stadium to be built. Since taking over their new home, the Huskers have posted a 229-77-1 record, including the school record season of 33-4 back in 2005. ?The stadium features chairback seats in the main seating bowl, a playground for children, and the recently added Husker Home Run terrace, which allows fans to be closer to the game. ?Are all of the chairbacks full? Take a seat on a grassy berm out over the outfield wall. By having the stadium in a bowl setting, fans are granted a view of downtown Lincoln and Memorial Stadium as they enjoy the day at the ballpark with their families. ?Along with being a great field for fans to enjoy, the stadium has picked up the honor of ?Best Playing Surface,? which they have been awarded every year since the stadium was opened. ?Hawks Field has also been named Sports Turf Management Association?s ?Baseball Field of the Year? for the college division in both 2003 and 2007, making them the first school to win twice. ?In addition to having a nice field, Hawks Field was the first collegiate venue to install ?SubAir,? which can heat or cool the field all year round. Fans seem to love flocking to Hawks Field; the Huskers have been among the Top 20 in attendance for nine out of ten years (In 2013, they ranked 19th.) After a baseball game, fans can use the connecting pedestrian walkway to go explore the Historic Haymarket district, or go catch a softball game at adjacent Bowlin Field.

(AP) ? A tour bus filled with Italians returning home after an excursion plunged off a highway into a ravine in southern Italy on Sunday night after it had smashed into several cars that were slowed by heavy traffic, killing at least 37 people, said police and rescuers.

Flashing signs near Avellino, outside Naples, had warned of slowed traffic ahead along a stretch of the A116 autostrada, a major highway crossing southern Italy, before the crash occurred, said highway police and officials, speaking on state radio early Monday. They said the bus driver, for reasons not yet determined, appeared to have lost control of his vehicle.

Hours after the crash, firefighters said that they had extracted 37 bodies ? most of the dead were found inside the mangled bus, which lay on its side , while a few of the victims were pulled out from underneath the wreckage, state radio and the Italian news agency ANSA reported..

The radio report said 11 people were hospitalized with injuries, two of them in very critical condition. It was not immediately known if there were other survivors or any missing.

Rescuers wielding electric saws cut through the twisted metal to better probe the interior of the bus, stopping occasionally in silence to listen for any cries for help, even as the bodies were put into coffins to be taken to a morgue.

Reports said as many as 49 people had been aboard the bus when it ripped through a guardrail after slamming into several cars, then plunged some 30 meters (100 feet) off the highway and into a ravine near a wooded area. In its plunge, the bus tore away whole sections of concrete barriers as well as guardrail. The concrete lay in large chunks in a clearing in a wooded area where the bus landed.

State radio quoted Avellino police as saying the bus driver was among the dead.

Occupants of cars which were hit by the bus stood on the highway near their vehicles. One car's rear was completely crumpled, while another was smashed on its side. It was not immediately known if anyone in those cars had been injured.

The highway links western and eastern Italy across the south.

Early reports said the passengers had spent the day in Puglia, an area near the Adriatic on the east coast famed for religious shrines. But on Monday, a state radio reporter at the scene said authorities told him that the bus had been bringing the passengers home after an outing to a thermal spa area near Benevento, a town not far from Avellino. Others at the scene said the passengers might have visited a town near Benevento that was the early home of Padre Pio, a late mystic monk highly popular among Catholics in Italy.

Passengers came from small towns near Naples, and relatives streamed to the crash site.

The bus dove off the highway near the town of Monteforte Irpino in Irpinia, a largely agricultural area about 40 miles (60 kilometers) inland from Naples and about 250 kilometers (160 miles) south of Rome.

A reporter for Naples daily Il Mattino, Giuseppe Crimaldi, told Sky TG24 TV from the scene that some witnesses told him the bus had been going at a "normal" speed on the downhill stretch of the highway when it suddenly veered and started hitting cars. He said some witnesses thought they heard a noise as if the bus had blown a tire.

A local prosecutor arrived at the crash scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Grammy-winning songwriter JJ Cale has died

Music

July 27, 2013 at 10:35 AM ET

Grammy-winning musician and songwriter JJ Cale, perhaps best known for writing Eric Clapton's hits "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," died Friday at age 74 after suffering a heart attack.

"We've lost a great artist and a great person tonight," a statement on his Facebook page read. The page said there are no immediate plans for a memorial service, but urged fans to consider a donation to their local animal shelter.

Cale was well-respected by musicians. Clapton told Vanity Fair magazine that Cale was the living person he most admired, and singer Neil Young said, "Of all the players I ever heard, it's gotta be Hendrix and JJ Cale who are the best electric guitar players."

Born in Oklahoma in 1938, Cale became one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a mix of rockabilly, country, rock 'n' roll, jazz and blues.

He left Oklahoma for Los Angeles as a young man, and was on the verge of giving up his struggle to make it in the music business in 1970 when Clapton recorded his song "After Midnight," and later "Cocaine."

Cale then released his own first album, "Naturally," in 1972, including his own version of "After Midnight." The album would bring him his only Top 100 hit, "Crazy Mama," which reached No. 22 on the Billboard charts. He continued to release solo albums until 2009, and can be heard on Clapton's new album, "Old Sock," released in March.

"I remember when I made my first album, I was 32 or 33 years old and I thought I was way too old then," Cale said in an interview on his website. "When I see myself doing this at 70, I go, ?What am I doing? I should be layin' down in a hammock.'"

In 2008, "After Midnight" was nominated to be the official rock song of the state of Oklahoma, but lost out to The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize?"

Cale's songs were also released by such famous names as Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Allman Brothers.

In 2008, he and Clapton won the Grammy for best contemporary blues album for the 2006 release, "The Road to Escondido." That album was certified gold for selling more than 500,000 units. Cale said on his website that he was perhaps prouder of his engineering and production work on the award-winning album than his performance.

"I think it goes back to me being a recording mixer and engineer. Because of all the technology now you can make music yourself and a lot of people are doing that now," he said. "I started out doing that a long time ago and I found when I did that I came up with a unique sound."

It never bothered him, he said on his site, that many people didn't know his name. "What's really nice is when you get a check in the mail," he said. "(Fame) elevates your ego to the point where you start believing your own (expletive)."

Real progress in Mexico's drug war must be local

When Mexican marines recently captured Miguel Angel Trevino, the head of Los Zetas, the country's most infamous and ruthless drug gang, Mexicans heard about it not from President Enrique Pena Nieto or one of his Cabinet officials, but from a spokesman at the Interior Ministry.

That low-key approach fits with the government's effort to play down information about drugs and violence, and it has been rewarded with improved public perceptions about crime and security.

Yet this strategy is also fraught with risk. Pena Nieto's administration is caught between saying so much that fear is reignited and saying so little that it appears insensitive to the very serious threats still facing many Mexicans.

Another threat is the potential public backlash if security doesn't improve at a faster rate in coming months. Combined with slow economic growth, unmet expectations on the security front could undermine the government's political standing.

In terms of reality, however, while Mexico's fight against crime is moving in the right direction, it is doing so at a haltingly slow pace, much as it was a year ago. Pena Nieto seems to be following the script laid out by his predecessor, Felipe Calderon: using the armed forces for policing; going after major kingpins; maintaining close, albeit more discreet, ties with U.S. security agencies.

class="TXBody">Likewise, the criminal underworld is undergoing a transition that started under Calderon: The old cartels are fragmenting into smaller gangs that are less involved in large- scale drug trafficking and more devoted to myriad forms of "rent extraction" (extortion, kidnapping, theft).

An ambitious reform of the criminal-justice system is proceeding unevenly: Some states have already completed the transition to a new oral and more open system, modeled somewhat on U.S. lines (as opposed to a written, inquisitorial system in which most proceedings happen behind closed doors); others have barely started the necessary legal changes. Some states have created new, better-trained, better-paid, more honest police forces; most are still stuck with corrupt, unreliable, unprepared law-enforcement units.

Thus, Pena Nieto must find ways to accelerate the pacification of Mexico. There are two possibilities.

First, he could pursue the ethically unpalatable and potentially suicidal option of finding some accommodation with the drug gangs.

Second, he could try to accelerate institutional reform at the state and local levels. Given the weakness of most local security institutions, even relatively minor improvements can yield quick gains. In the northern state of Nuevo Leon, for example, the creation of a new police force has led to a 50 percent decline in homicides and a 70 percent reduction in car thefts over the past year.

How do you replicate that experience? Some budgetary incentives might help - creating, for instance, block grants for states and cities that achieve specific institutional transformation goals, such as the creation of vetted police forces or elite anti-kidnapping units. In addition, if state governments request the presence of federal forces, there could be stricter conditionality, linking their deployment or permanence to police and criminal-justice reforms.

U.S. economic assistance needs to be creatively leveraged if it is to be truly useful. At less than $300 million a year, the Merida Initiative is too small to change the security equation at the national level, but it could potentially modulate the behavior of local players. U.S.-funded programs could be aimed at state governments that make serious reform efforts, leading to virtuous competition among subnational jurisdictions.

In a broad pacification strategy, the Mexican government could complement institutional change with focused targeting of the most violent groups. The demolition of the Zetas provides a useful template: The government could warn other gangs, explicitly or tacitly, that they are next in line for the same treatment unless they reduce the violence.

These items are not yet part of the current policy mix. The authorities seem to trust that a somewhat improved version of the Calderon strategy - with slightly better interagency and intergovernmental coordination - along with some ramped-up crime-prevention programs can produce radically superior results. They could be right, but big bets on that outcome would be rather risky.

In the long run, Mexico is likely to become more peaceful, particularly if structural reforms lead to stronger economic growth. A larger middle class will demand improved public services, including the police and the criminal-justice system. However, that process is too far off in the future to be relevant to the current administration.

Violence devoured the Calderon presidency. To avoid that fate, Pena Nieto must go beyond just talking a good game - or, in this case, not talking a bad one. Media savvy can only take you so far in a country with 25,000 murder victims every year.

Hernandez associate held on $500,000 bail

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) ? A man prosecutors say was with Aaron Hernandez the night the former New England Patriots tight end's friend was killed has been held on $500,000 cash bail.

Ernest Wallace appeared Friday in Attleboro District Court on a charge of being an accessory after the fact to murder.

His lawyer argued that Wallace was not a flight risk and wanted to return to his family in Florida. Attorney David Meier sought bail of $10,000.

Prosecutors said Wallace was Hernandez's "right-hand man" and sought $1 million bail.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to murder in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old Boston semi-professional football player whose body was found June 17 in an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez's home.

Prosecutors say Hernandez orchestrated Lloyd's killing because he was upset with him.

Obama's unlikely climate change partner: China

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has stumbled on an unusual partner in his quest to combat climate change: China.

The world's two biggest emitters of heat-trapping greenhouse gases are finding common cause in efforts to reduce global warming, cooperation the U.S. says could clear the way for other developing nations like India and Brazil to get on board, too.

Skeptics question whether either nation will follow through on lofty aspirations. Still, the budding agreements are allowing the two rivals to present a positive front at a time when tensions are running high over espionage, alleged cybertheft and American fugitive Edward Snowden.

Last week, top American and Chinese officials announced new joint initiatives, including cutting emissions from heavy-duty vehicles and upping energy efficiency of buildings, transport and industry. They also agreed to team up on large-scale experiments with "carbon capture" ? technology to isolate carbon dioxide from power plant emissions so it can be safely stored. Lack of commercially viable technology has been a major barrier to making plants cleaner in the U.S. and abroad.

A month earlier, Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) met in the California desert for a summit aimed at forging closer ties. The sole concrete achievement was a deal to phase out hydrofluorocarbons, a potent greenhouse gas used in refrigerators and air conditioners.

"This is a priority for the president and for me," Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday during a speech on Asian relations, specifically mentioning the accord with China. "The impact of climate change also has an impact as growth as well as security."

The world's most populous country, China has long been perceived globally as an unabashed polluter but has started to change its tone. In 2007 China's notoriously pragmatic and economy-focused government called, in a national strategic document, for an "ecological civilization," reflecting a move toward balancing environmental protection with development.

China's environmental imperatives are clear: suffocating smog in Beijing, rising sea levels and polluted water and soil that can stifle development. Already vying with the U.S. as the world's largest manufacturer, China looks at policies that constrain industry growth differently than other, largely agricultural developing nations in Africa or Asia.

Beijing may also see renewable and clean energy as a growing global fad and want to ensure they're not left out. In 2010, China's government spent more than $30 billion subsidizing its solar panel industry, U.S. energy officials said. And the U.S. shale natural gas boom is attracting major Chinese investment, too.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington didn't respond to a request for comment.

For Obama, jumpstarting the global climate change effort is a key to his second-term agenda and his legacy. Reducing U.S. greenhouse gases will only go so far. Mounting emissions planetwide could blunt the impact of what Obama does at home.

That's where China could play a critical role.

"China is a huge weight in the global system," said Jonathan Pershing, the Energy Department's top climate official and a former U.S. climate negotiator, in an interview. "It has a developing country framework, so other developing countries say, 'Certainly if China can do it, we can do it, too.'"

Although China is unlikely to actively nudge other nations, the overriding U.S. concern is that China not spoil global agreements that would otherwise proceed, Pershing said. That's because climate accords tend to be governed by consensus. Such a phenomenon was on display in 2009, when China was accused of wrecking a stronger agreement in Copenhagen over its resistance to specific emissions limits.

The upbeat tone on climate comes as a series of disputes have complicated Obama's attempts to improve relations with China and strengthen U.S. influence in Asia.

Washington has complained loudly to Beijing about cyberhacking and intellectual property. The White House also says bilateral relations were dealt a serious blow by China's refusal to extradite Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker, before he fled Hong Kong. At the same time, Snowden's revelations about U.S. surveillance emboldened Chinese officials to argue Obama's complaints about cybersecurity are hypocritical.

And China's growing investment and influence in sub-Saharan Africa, where it's surpassed the U.S. as the largest trading partner, were on display last month as Obama traveled the continent.

"There are pressures on the U.S. and China to do something about global warming, and it happens to fit in with the idea of expanding cooperation to try to contain and hopefully reverse the growing strategic rivalry," said a former U.S. Ambassador to China, J. Stapleton Roy.

The White House hopes that political pressure from China's expanding middle class may spur China to further action.

It remains to be seen whether the cooperation on climate will extend much beyond diplomatic niceties. After all, the U.S. and China have at times made similar pronouncements, said Elizabeth Economy, director of Asia studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"There are many, many good ideas that simply don't come to fruition," Economy said. "There are reasons why it hasn't worked very well in the past. As far as I can see, those same reasons exist today."

Uber Ice Cream returns July 19th, takes on-demand dessert worldwide (video)

Uber Ice Cream returns, takes ondemand refreshment worldwide video

Veteran Uber members will remember last year's Uber Ice Cream: for one day only, they could use the company's mobile app to hail an ice cream truck and beat the heat. The program is thankfully coming back on July 19th, and this time on a much larger scale. Customers in 18 US cities and 16 international cities can order group-sized batches of ice cream that should arrive within minutes; the most common US pricing offers five desserts for $25. You'll need to both sign up and download Uber's Android or iOS apps if you want to take part, but those small hassles could lead to some big relief from the summer swelter.

US Military, Monsanto Targeting GMO Activists and Independent Scientists, New Investigation Alleges

By Sayer Ji
Green Med Info
July 15, 2013

As revealed yesterday by?Sustainable Pulse, on July 13th the German newspaper?S?ddeutsche Zeitung?detailed information on how the US Government ?advances the interests of their corporations,? focusing on Monsanto as a prime example.

The report titled, ?The Sinister Monsanto Group: ?Agent Orange? to Genetically Modified Corn,? described a ?new fangled cyber war? being waged against both eco-activists and independent scientists by supporters and former employees of Monsanto, who are described as ?operationally powerful assistants? and who have taken up sometimes high ranking posts in the US administration, regulatory authorities, and some of whom have connections deep within the military industrial establishment, including the CIA.

??Monsanto contacts are known to the notorious former secret service agent Joseph Cofer Black, who helped formulate the law of the jungle in the fight against terrorists and other enemies. He is a specialist on dirty work, a total hardliner. He worked for the CIA for almost three decades, among other things as the head of anti-terroism. He later became vice president of the private security company Blackwater, which sent tens of thousands of soldiers to Iraq and Afghanistan under US government orders.?

?Thanks to Snowden and Wikileaks, the world has a new idea of how these friends and partners operate where power and money are concerned. The whistle-blowing platform published embassy dispatches two years ago, which also included details about Monsanto and genetic engineering.?

?For example, in 2007, the former US ambassador in Paris, Craig Stapleton, suggested the US government should create a penalties list for EU states which wanted to forbid the cultivation of genetically engineered plants from American companies. The wording of the secret dispatch: ?Country team Paris recommends that we calibrate a target retaliation list that causes some pain across the EU.? Pain, retaliation: not exactly the language of diplomacy.?

The report went on to describe the ongoing though mostly failed crusade of the United States, seemingly on behalf of Monsanto, to open up the European Union?s markets to genetically engineered food and feed crops. According to the report:

?The USA is hoping that negotiations started this week for a free-trade agreement between the USA and the EU will also open the markets for genetic engineering.?

?The Americans want to use the Free Trade Agreement to open the European GMO Market. The negotiations will be detailed. Toughness will rule the day. US President Barack Obama has therefore appointed Islam Siddiqui as chief negotiator for agriculture. He has worked for many years for the US ministry of agriculture as an expert. However, hardly anyone in Europe knows: From 2001 to 2008, he represented CropLife America as a registered lobbyist. CropLife America is an important industry association in the United States, representing the interests of pesticide and gene technology manufacturers ? including of course Monsanto. ?Actually, the EU cannot accept such a chief negotiator because of bias?, says Manfred Hausling, who represents the Green Party in the EU parliament.

If this report is accurate, we can assume that Monsanto has so thoroughly populated both the government and military industrial complex with its own supporters that any remaining illusion of there being a division of Corporation and State has now been dispelled. ?Worse, we are bearing witness to the preeminence of the Corporation over State, the very definition of a corpocracy.

Diogenes' Middle Finger: Florida State Attorney fires Information Techonology Director who raised concerns in Trayvon Martin case evidence

Florida State Attorney fires Information Techonology Director who raised concerns in Trayvon Martin case evidence

    Jacksonville.com
"State Attorney Angela Corey fired her office?s information technology director Friday after he testified last month about being concerned prosecutors did not turn over information to George Zimmerman?s defense team in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
On the same day attorneys finished their closing arguments in that nationally watched trial, a state attorney investigator went to Ben Kruidbos? home about 7:30 a.m. to hand-deliver a letter stating Kruidbos ?can never again be trusted to step foot in this office.?
The letter contended Kruibos did a poor job overseeing the information technology department, violated public records law for retaining documents, and noted he was questioned in March when the office was trying to determine who had leaked personnel information obtained through a computer breach.
In an interview Friday, Kruidbos denied the allegations in the letter, which was written by Cheryl Peek, the managing director of the State Attorney?s Office....."
His attorney Wesley White ? who resigned from the State Attorney?s Office in December and is a critic of Corey ? said the firing was aimed at sending a message to office employees ?that if they feel like there is wrongdoing,? they should not disclose it or seek legal guidance from a private attorney....."
In January, he used computer software technology to extract photographs and text messages from the source file in Martin?s cellphone. Kruidbos was able to recover more information than the Florida Department of Law Enforcement obtained previously.
Kruidbos said he became concerned that lead prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda might not have turned over Kruidbos? report to defense attorneys. Kruidbos asked White in April for legal advice and described some contents of his report such as a photo of an African-American hand holding a gun, a photo of a plant resembling marijuana and a text message referring to a gun transaction......"?

From the website: ??????????????????????? Mike's Belay Glasses are a no-hassle way of equipping oneself with the latest in Littrow prism technology to ease the belayer's lot in life. Basically, one looks forward to gaze upward, saving on neck strain. 1. They allow the belayer to comfortably assume a position closer to the base of climbs, which translates to a safer belay. 2. They allow the belayer to more fully concentrate attention to the task at hand, especially on long, protracted sessions. 3. They accomplish this at roughly 1/4 the cost of the other product on the market ? much easier for average climber's budget. 4. One of the advantages of prismware is that it doesn't invert the image of the climber the way a mirror would ? also, it slightly magnifies what one sees. 5.
