NEW YORK (AP) ? NCAA President Mark Emmert says the firings of several highly successful coaches involved in scandals shows a "sea change in responsibility" in college sports.
Ohio State, North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee and, most notably, Penn State with Joe Paterno, all dismissed winning football and men's basketball coaches in the past year.
Emmert says coaches such as Paterno, Jim Tressel, Butch Davis, Bobby Petrino and Bruce Pearl had been considered "untouchable" in the past. All were fired because off-the-field issues.
Speaking Friday to the Associated Press Sports Editors, Emmert also said transfer rules are too complex and added NBA rules that have led to one-and-done men's basketball players make it "hard with a straight face say these are student-athletes."
