Afghan lawmaker blasts early French withdrawal (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? An Afghan lawmaker has sharply criticized France's plans to withdraw its troops from the country early and to hand over responsibility for security in her troubled province to Afghan troops within a few months.

Tahira Mujadedi is a member of parliament from Kapisa province. She said Saturday that the eastern Afghan province will further descend into violence if Afghan forces take over security from NATO troops in March, as French President Nicolas Sarkozy announced after the deaths of four French troops in Kapisa on Jan. 20.

Mujadedi also says it would be "a big mistake" for President Hamid Karzai to push Sarkozy's proposal to speed up NATO's timetable for handing all combat operations to Afghan forces to 2013 instead of 2014.
